  Night Bugs

Cicadas are absolutely freaky to experience at night, when they can be out in large numbers. There is no protection... they will come to you.

Don't believe it?

Download these MPEG movies and see for yourself - even the dog wouldn't go near them at night.

Note: RIGHT-CLICK and then SAVE-TARGET-AS to save and view from your local hard drive (once the file is finished downloading, select "OPEN" to view it right away)

  • Note #2 - the first two movies were taken outdoors, and may appear darker on some monitors - bugs should be visible on both movies.
  • Clip 1: Cicada invasion movie - cluster of tiny monsters (you can see one screaming and flying around at the very end)
  • Clip 2: Single cawing cicada sound movie
  • Clip 3a:"It followed me home - can I keep it?" Cicadas making awful sounds in a bowl - after they had attacked outside.
  • Clip 3b: shorter version of awful cicadas sounds from the ride-home pet (i.e. if you have a slow connection try this first).

Cicadas will try and scare you away (and it would work on many of the bravest of us!) - they fly at you or land on you, and start making their "brraaaahhh!!!" sound. Luckily they are harmless.

The "bowl of bugs" movie above is of some cicadas that attacked at night, some had even latched onto the back and top of a t-shirt until about 30 minutes later when they started "sounding" again.
